SADC Appoints Distinguished African Jurist to Lead Team Observing Seychelles Elections

Voting in the Seychelles general election has just been concluded and vote counting is currently taking place, under the watch of a team of experts appointed by the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), as part of the regional block’s election observer mission. Retired Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi, Hon Andrew K.C Nyirenda has been appointed to lead this Election Observer Mission. A veteran judge and jurist, Retired Chief Justice Nyirenda has a demonstrable track record of promoting and defending the rule of lawin Africa. He presided over the Supreme Court of Malawi when it became the first court to set aside the results of a presidential election in Malawi and the second to do so in Africa, after the Supreme of Kenya. Upon his retirement in 2022, Retired Chief Justice Nyirenda was appointed Judge of the International Monetary Fund administrative tribunal and has continued to serve as a mentor to several judges, young legal scholars and lawyers on the continent and beyond. Retired Chief Justice Nyirenda is a member of the Judicial Elders Council of the Africa Judges and Jurists Forum, where he fulfils important roles, including mediating in crises that threaten judicial independence and the rule of law across the continent. The Republic of Seychelles is privileged to hold its elections under the supervision of such a trusted and fireless jurist. Retired Chief Justice Nyirenda’s leadership of the SADC Election Observer Mission to Seychelles also underscores the Africa Judges and Jurists Forum’s collective commitment to supporting democratic systems and strengthening electoral processes across the region.
