AJJF MOURNS JUSTICE MOSES CHINHENGO

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Justice Moses Chinhengo who was the Chairperson of our Board at Africa Judges and Jurists Forum. Together with other eminent judges and jurists, Justice Moses Chinhengo co-founded the Africa Judges and Jurists Forum. 

From 1996 to 2004, Justice Moses Chinhengo served as a Judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe.  He then continued his judicial service as a Judge of the High Court of Botswana from 2004 to 2012. From 2014, Justice Chinhengo served as an Acting Justice of the Court of Appeal of Lesotho, and, in 2021 he was appointed Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of Namibia. Since 2023 and up to the time of his passing, he was serving as Acting Judge of the High Court of Namibia. We will remember Justice Moses Chinhengo as a humble, remarkable and trail blazing thought leader and judge who dispensed justice without fear or favour. He leaves behind a legacy of defending judicial independence and progressive jurisprudence spanning across several jurisdictions. We will dearly miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult period.

The Africa Judges & Jurists Forum (AJJF) deeply mourns the passing of our esteemed Board Chair and co-founder, Justice Moses Chinhengo.

At the burial, AJJF Secretary General Martin Okumu-Masiga delivered a heartfelt eulogy, celebrating Justice Chinhengo’s remarkable legacy of judicial independence, progressive jurisprudence, and fearless service across Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, and Namibia.

We honour his life, his humility, and his trail-blazing commitment to the rule of law. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who were inspired by his work.

🕊️ Tribute to Justice Moses Chinhengo

During the burial of our beloved Board Chair and co-founder, Justice Moses Chinhengo, part of the eulogy by Prof. Justice Oagile Key Dingake, AJJF Board member, was movingly read on his behalf by Justice Chinhengo’s daughter.

Prof. Justice Dingake’s words honoured Justice Chinhengo’s fearless defence of judicial independence, his humility, and his enduring legacy of progressive jurisprudence across Africa.

May his life’s work continue to inspire judges and jurists across generations.
