Accelerating Action: Women in the Legal Profession Driving Change in Judicial Independence and Reparative Justice

Webinar Title: Accelerating Action: Women in the Legal Profession Driving Change in Judicial Independence and Reparative Justice

As we celebrate Women’s Month in March, it’s crucial to reflect on the significant contributions of women across various sectors. The legal profession, long dominated by men, has witnessed transformative changes due to the leadership, advocacy, and resilience of women. One notable event this month is the upcoming webinar, “Accelerate Action: Women in the Legal Profession Navigating Challenges and Driving Change in Judicial Independence and Reparative Justice,” organized by the African Judges and Jurists Forum (AJJF) in partnership with Africa Reparations Hub, University of The Free State, Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL), and Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU). The event will be held on the 27th of March 2025, at 14:00 SAST on Zoom.

A Critical Moment for Change

March is a powerful month for women’s rights, with International Women’s Day on March 8th and International Day of Women Judges on March 10th, creating a platform to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. The theme of International Women’s Day 2025, “Accelerate Action,” calls for urgent action in tackling gender inequalities and advancing women’s empowerment. This is particularly relevant in the legal profession, where women continue to face systemic barriers despite significant strides toward gender equality.

Across the globe, women make up a substantial portion of the legal profession, yet they remain underrepresented in leadership roles, especially in judicial positions. According to UN Women (2024), women constitute only 43% of magistrates and judges in lower courts, with an even smaller percentage in higher courts. In Africa, the barriers are even more entrenched, with gender-based discrimination, institutional biases, and a lack of equal opportunities limiting women’s advancement within the legal field.

Yet, as challenging as the journey may be, women continue to drive profound change in the legal profession, contributing significantly to the strengthening of judicial independence and advancing reparative justice across the continent.

Why This Webinar Matters

This webinar will explore the indispensable role of women in the legal profession, focusing on two key areas: Judicial Independence and Reparative Justice.

  • Judicial Independence:
Judicial independence is vital to ensuring that legal decisions are free from political or external influence. Unfortunately, many African nations face significant challenges in this area, with political interference and corruption undermining the credibility of legal institutions. Women judges, however, are proven advocates for transparency, accountability, and human rights. Their leadership in judicial decision-making helps to create fairer, more democratic systems that safeguard citizens’ rights. By elevating women to leadership positions in the judiciary, we can ensure that justice is delivered impartially and equitably.
  • Reparative Justice:
Reparative justice involves addressing the legacies of historical wrongs, such as colonial exploitation, land dispossession, and systemic discrimination. Women in the legal profession are at the forefront of advocating for reparative frameworks that acknowledge these injustices and seek to heal the wounds they have caused, especially for marginalized communities. As nations continue to grapple with the effects of colonialism and structural inequalities, the role of women in advocating for reparations becomes crucial to achieving long-lasting justice.

Tackling Barriers: A Path Toward Equality

Although women have made significant strides in the legal profession, there are still numerous barriers to their full participation and leadership. These include:

  • Gender-based discrimination: Women in the legal field often face systemic biases that hinder their promotion to senior positions.
  • Cultural and institutional barriers: Cultural norms in many African countries discourage women from pursuing high-profile careers in law or ascending to judicial leadership roles.
  • Work-life balance: The legal profession demands long hours and significant personal sacrifices, which can disproportionately affect women, especially in societies with limited support systems for working mothers.

The webinar will provide a platform to discuss these challenges and explore actionable strategies to overcome them, fostering a more inclusive and equitable legal profession for women.

Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Law

This webinar is not just an opportunity to identify challenges; it’s also a celebration of the achievements of women in the legal field. From judges to legal scholars to human rights advocates, women have made invaluable contributions to the development of judicial independence and the pursuit of reparative justice. This event will highlight their successes, share their stories, and inspire the next generation of women legal professionals.

What to Expect

The webinar will feature discussions and presentations from distinguished panelists who are experts in judicial independence, reparative justice, and gender equality. Topics will include:

  • The critical role of women judges in strengthening judicial independence.
  • Exploring the gendered impact of historical injustices and how women in the legal profession are advancing reparative justice for marginalized communities.
